A Senior Accountant with a Tax emphasis is responsible for organizing and coordinating clients’ tax data for the accurate and timely completion of individual, corporate, partnership and S corporation returns. Performs most work assigned with minimal assistance from a higher level tax professional. Will provide assistance to less experienced tax preparers. Seniors are expected to handle moderately complex tax matters.

You have (requirements):

  • 2 – 3 years experience in public accounting, demonstrating a progression in complexity of auditing and accounting tasks and tax knowledge.
  • 4 year degree in accounting, or Master’s degree in taxation.
  • Minimum of forty hours of continuing professional education is required each year.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Either holds a current and valid certified public accountant’s license, or is working toward obtaining the license by taking and passing the Minnesota CPA exam OR holds a current enrolled agent license or is working toward obtaining their EA.
  • If licensed, should be a member in good standing with the AICPA and MN CPA societies.
  • Proficiency in use of computers and computer accounting and tax software programs.

You will (job responsibilities):

  • Performs diversified accounting, auditing, and tax assignments under the direction of a manger, director or partner.
  • Reviews tax information submitted by client for completeness; prepares list of questions and missing information. Communicates with client directly, or through partner on the engagement.
  • Confirms that data collected is complete, reasonable, and accurate.
  • Prepares individual and business returns of various complexities.
  • Prepares amended returns, property tax refunds, carry back returns for net operating losses, and other returns as needed.
  • Makes adjusting entries and completes trial balances in order to prepare a tax return.
  • Maintains a good understanding of depreciation and depreciation computer software package in order to set up clients and read and understand depreciation reports.
  • Prepares tax accruals as may be required in preparing corporate tax returns.
  • Demonstrates competency in technical skills, work quality, and application of professional and firm standards.
  • Meets time constraints and client deadlines.
  • Participates in planning and scheduling client engagements.
  • Directs and instructs staff accountants, where applicable, in work to be performed and reviews their work papers.
  • Assigns work to staff accountants based on their knowledge and capabilities.
  • Prepares and indexes work papers; performs various procedures established under generally accepted accounting principles to verify accuracy and validity of client’s financial matters.
  • Suggests client tax planning ideas to manager or partner.
  • Performs the broadest range of accountant tasks so that direct participation of managers or partners is kept to a minimum.
  • Prepares invoices to clients.
  • Start establishing a presence in the community by participating in civic organizations such as chamber of commerce, rotary etc.
  • Represents the firm in a positive and professional manner at all business related functions.

Travel:

  • Occasional same day travel for work at client’s offices, meeting, and seminars using a personal vehicle.
  • Occasional out-of-town travel with overnight stay for work at client’s offices, meetings, and seminars using personal vehicle.
  • Occasional overtime work required throughout the year. Heavy overtime work required from January to April 15; may be in excess of 55 hours per week. Required to work on Saturdays during this time period.

A Tax Manager is responsible for the efficient, accurate, complete, and timely preparation of all clients’ tax returns.  Advanced technical skills in a variety of tax and accounting areas, along with well-developed management and supervisory skills are required.

You Have:

  • At least six (6) years experience in public accounting, demonstrating a progression in tax return complexity, scope, and research.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience supervising and directing work of tax preparers.
  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or Master’s degree in taxation.
  • A current and valid certified public accountant’s license is required OR a current and valid enrolled agent license.
  • Proficiency in tax research skills..

You will (job responsibilities):

  • Performs technical tax review of all tax returns (individual, business, trust, gift, not-for-profit, and miscellaneous, as needed).
  • Identifies and manages issues and ensures the accuracy of the tax return.
  • Demonstrates the ability to apply knowledge in one or more technical specialty areas.
  • Assumes responsibility for smooth flow of tax returns through the tax preparation system to assure accurate, complete, and timely preparation and delivery of all clients’ tax returns.
  • Acts as a resource for tax preparers on specific tax issues and/or questions.
  • Performs tax research to resolve issues identified during reviews.
  • Communicates to the appropriate firm personnel important tax developments affecting the firm’s clients.
  • Develops/refines tax preparation procedures to increase efficiency and effectiveness of the process.  Prepares documentation of procedures and communicates to staff.
  • Works to develop responsible, trained staff by assisting in recruiting, performance evaluations, developing training aids, and acting as an instructor in professional development programs.
  • Supervises staff and provides on-the-job training.
  • Maintains familiarity with qualifications of staff members; reviews staff assignments for appropriateness.
  • Assumes client service responsibility for clients the tax manager works with directly, or where the responsibility is delegated from the partner.
  • Possesses a complete knowledge of the firm’s philosophy and its’ opinion on tax matters.
  • Participates in the firm’s Mentor Program as a mentor to senior and staff accountants.
  • Supervises the use of ProSystem tax software, communicates updates to be installed, resolves issues and answers questions related to using the software.
  • Supervises electronic filing of tax forms and ensures timely resolution of issues.  Communicates updates from IRS and changes in firm procedures to administrative personnel.
  • Develops materials and conducts new hire training in the firm’s tax preparation procedures.
  • Monitors CCH Workflow software to ensure all tax projects are tracked through tax preparation and delivery process.
  • Prepares annual staff evaluations and engagement performance reviews.
  • Represents the firm in a positive and professional manner at all business related functions.

Travel:

  • Occasional same day travel for work at client’s offices, meeting, and seminars using a personal vehicle.
  • Occasional out-of-town travel with overnight stay for work at client’s offices, meetings, and seminars using personal vehicle.

An A&A Manager is the liaison between the partner, the client, and the professional staff. Managers are responsible for managing multiple auditing and accounting projects and client engagements simultaneously, and scheduling, staffing, and coordinating engagement workflow. Managers develop and train staff, and make associations to develop new business for the firm.

  • Responsible for all phases of an audit, review, or compilation engagement. Plans engagements, budgets time and expenses, and monitors actual performance against budget.
  • Assumes full responsibility for supervising engagements and special assignments using established firm policies and procedures.
  • Maintains contact with clients throughout the year; possesses a thorough knowledge of the client and all facets of the client’s business.
  • Plans, schedules and staffs engagements using firm policies and procedures.
  • Maintains familiarity with qualifications of all staff members; reviews staff assignments for appropriateness. Assigns work to staff members based on their knowledge and capabilities.
  • Prepares engagement letter for approval by partner.
  • Evaluates internal controls and work programs prepared by staff.
  • Monitors and adheres to engagement time budgets.
  • Supervises staff and provides on-the-job training; reviews work papers and reports prepared by staff for accuracy and completeness.
  • Anticipates problem areas of engagement and questions that will arise.
  • Resolves accounting and auditing problems as they arise.
  • Keeps partner informed of all important developments on engagement; analyzes problems and recommends solutions.
  • Reviews financial statements, notes, schedules, management letters, and tax returns for later discussion at the exit conference with the client.
  • Communicates progress of engagement, problems and resolutions, financial information, tax activity and other business concerns to the client.
  • Works to develop responsible, trained staff by assisting in performance evaluations. Offers guidance and direction, and gives constructive criticism of work papers.
  • Prepares invoices to clients, communicates details of fees to clients, and assists in collection of overdue accounts.
  • Possesses a complete knowledge of the firm’s philosophy and its opinions on financial matters.
  • Ensures that work papers, financial statements, tax returns, and letters of recommendations are prepared in accordance with generally accepted professional and firm standards. Reviews financial statements for suitability of presentation and adequacy of disclosures.
  • Maintains knowledge of general economic and political trends of possible tax or other legislation that could affect the business climate.
  • Prepares annual staff evaluations and engagement performance reviews.
  • Serves as a mentor to staff and senior staff.
  • Establish a presence in the community through participating in civic organizations.
  • Represents the firm in a positive and professional manner at all business related functions

A Senior Accountant in our Audit & Assurance department performs most work assigned with a minimum of assistance. They often lead one or more staff accountants, instruct them in work to be performed, review the work when done, and direct necessary revisions. Seniors are required to make decisions on all but the most unusual accounting and auditing matters. Senior Audit Accountants are involved with audits, reviews and compilations with clients in a wide range of industries.
